Herb visits… Paris

Conventional wisdom has it that there are better times to visit Paris than the middle of August. Most people prefer it when shops are open and there are natives in residence, but there’s a peacefulness at this time of year which encourages aimless wandering and a pleasantly unfocussed approach to sightseeing.

It's a myth that the city shuts down, but it certainly takes a rest. Windows are shuttered, smaller shops and cafés close, and for the visitor there's a very slight sense of snooping around someone's property while they're out.

A few days in Paris gave us time to peer into courtyards, amble through new neighbourhoods and, of course, we were able to revisit some favourite places from our map.
